1688 vs Taobao
Taobao sells single items to Chinese consumers. 1688 sells wholesale tiers to Chinese businesses. Both are Alibaba Group, both are domestic-only, and both need an agent if you are outside China.
For one or two pieces, Taobao is usually cheaper and always easier. From roughly ten pieces upward, 1688 pulls ahead and keeps widening.

The practical differences
- Quantity: Taobao sells singles; 1688 prices drop at tier breaks, commonly 2, 10, 50 and 100 pieces.
- Listing quality: Taobao listings are written for consumers and are clearer. 1688 listings are terse and assume trade knowledge.
- Customisation: 1688 sellers will do private label and OEM work. Taobao sellers generally will not.
- Returns: Taobao has consumer protection. 1688 does not, in any form you can use from abroad.
Why people still buy retail on Taobao
Sampling. Buying one piece from Taobao to see the real object before committing to a 1688 wholesale tier is cheaper than any other form of due diligence, and the agent flow is identical.
Questions & answers
Common questions
- Can one agent handle both?
- Yes. Most agents buy from Taobao, 1688, Weidian and Pinduoduo into the same warehouse and ship them together.
- Is Taobao quality worse?
- Not inherently — a lot of Taobao stock comes from the same factories. What differs is that you are buying one unit from a reseller rather than a tier from a supplier.
