general sourcing / Buying guide
Guangzhou sourcing agent
Guangzhou and the surrounding Pearl River Delta is the densest manufacturing region in China for apparel, footwear, leather goods, bags and accessories, plus a great deal of electronics assembly nearby in Shenzhen and Dongguan.
A Guangzhou-based agent matters when you need someone physically in the wholesale markets — which is worth paying for in apparel and leather, and largely irrelevant for stock goods you found online.
In this guide
What the region covers
- Apparel and textiles, concentrated in the Zhongda fabric market district.
- Leather goods and bags, around Baiyun World Leather Trading Centre.
- Shoes, in dedicated wholesale complexes across the city.
- Electronics and components, an hour away in Shenzhen.
- Furniture and home, in Foshan, roughly 30 km west.
When being local matters
For anything where the material decides the product — fabric hand, leather grain, hardware finish — an agent who can go and touch it is doing work you cannot do remotely, and the market stalls often have no online presence at all.
For stock goods with a 1688 listing and photographs, location is irrelevant. Any agent with a warehouse can handle it.
The Canton Fair
Held twice a year in spring and autumn, across three phases by product category. It is the single most efficient way to meet a large number of export-ready suppliers in person, and it is oriented toward export buyers rather than domestic wholesale.
Questions & answers
Common questions
- Is Guangzhou cheaper than Yiwu?
- For apparel, leather and footwear, yes. For small commodities, gifts and mixed-category orders, Yiwu is cheaper and easier.
- Do I need to visit?
- For a first custom apparel or leather programme, a visit pays for itself. For repeat stock orders, no.
