1688.com is a genuine Alibaba Group marketplace and one of the largest wholesale platforms in the world. The platform is not the risk.
The risk is that you are buying from individual sellers in a market designed for domestic buyers who can escalate disputes in Chinese, under Chinese process, from a Chinese address — three things you cannot do.

- Buy from sellers with multi-year history and high repeat-purchase rates.
- Confirm specifications in writing before payment, and keep the message thread.
- Inspect at the warehouse before international shipping, while the goods are still in China and still returnable.

The platform’s protections are built around domestic disputes. In practice your recourse as a foreign buyer is your agent — which is why an agent who inspects before shipping is worth more than one who is merely cheap.
